1. Moss Rock Preserve

Just 20 minutes from downtown, Moss Rock Preserve is a local favorite with dense hardwood forest, natural rock formations, and small waterfalls. The shaded trails wind past creeks and rocky outcrops, making it easy to stay cool even on a hot day. The boulder field is a popular spot to climb or take a break, and the peaceful scenery makes for a refreshing escape from the city.

2. Ruffner Mountain

This nature preserve on the eastern edge of the city features miles of wooded trails and occasional scenic overlooks. The Quarry and Ridge and Valley trails offer some of the best shade and are typically quieter than the main routes. It’s a great place to spot wildlife, enjoy stillness, and soak in some elevated views of Birmingham—all under the comfort of a thick canopy.

3. Red Mountain Park

Located just minutes from downtown, Red Mountain Park offers miles of mostly shaded trails.
