It’s perfect Tom Petty weather they say. The outdoors have become more welcoming as the weather warms and the daylight stays out past 7pm. It makes us want to step out “into the great wide open, under the skies so blue” and embrace each new day to the fullest. We are lucky to live in a state that is known for its natural beauty, meaning Alabama and the Birmingham area have a long list of glorious outdoor places to explore. Whether it’s a city park, a hidden waterfall, or a glistening lake - there is so much to take in! About Town is here to help you with your outdoor explorations. Here are a few of our favorite places to visit for a breath of fresh air.

Rotary Trail

‍

Birmingham is truly blessed to have a city trail that is as pleasant to walk as the Rotary Trail. The initial phase of the path began near Railroad Park and was highlighted by the famous “Rotary Trail in the Magic City” sign. It is now extended with the Jones Valley Trail Corridor which goes through Avondale all the way to East Lake Park and Ruffner Mountain. It’s a wonderful stretch of land that can be explored by bike, eclectic scooter, or a leisurely walk.

Ruffner Mountain

Speaking of Ruffner Mountain, you can’t find a better nature preserve and park in Birmingham. The short drive from downtown to this East Lake-area park brings astounding views of the city and a multitude of trails that provide a first-hand look at how beautiful our state truly is. The park also hosts fun and educational events, such as Greenhouse Days which occur every Saturday in April. Bring your dog, bring a friend, or take a solitary walk. You’ll have a wonderful time.

Red Mountain

Another nearby park that is full of adventures to be had is Red Mountain, which is located off the Lakeshore exit on I-65 in Homewood. There are dozens of trails to enjoy and take in Alabama’s beauty, and the recent addition of the RideBHM downhill bike park has brought out thrill-seekers from all over the Southeast. We’d highly recommend checking out this fun park.

Oak Mountain

It’s hard to find an outdoor area with more to do than Oak Mountain State Park. The massive display of Alabama’s natural beauty contains hiking trails, a beach, wildlife rehabilitation centers, the famous Peavine Falls, and so much more. I recently spent a day falling in love with the Alabama outdoors all over again at Oak Mountain, and would highly recommend the experience to all.

Sloss Furnaces

How can one of Alabama’s most haunted places also be one of the most beautiful? Sometimes life is intriguing like that. Sloss Furnaces gives Birmingham residents and visitors a one-of-a-kind experience that blends history with visually stunning structures and an opportunity to learn more about the metal arts of today.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

If you are trying to see some beautiful plants while enjoying your day, we would highly recommend the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The space is dedicated to natural beauty and hosts plant sales, educational courses, and so many other benefits in addition to being a wonderful garden to visit.

These are only a few of the thousand wonderful outdoor spaces you can find around the Magic City. The important part is that you are getting out and enjoying some fresh air with fantastic views. As Tom Petty says, “The sky is the limit”.
