It is hot in the Magic City, and while the World Games competitors have returned to their homes around the globe, us Birminghamians are here to stick it out for the rest of the summer. While we love our hometown, even Magic City residents need a break from the heat on occasion. Fortunately there are plenty of natural water formations and air conditioned buildings for us to choose from. Here’s 5 of the best area spots to cool down around the Birmingham area.

Oak Mountain State Park

Oak Mountain State Park is one of the finest places to take in Alabama’s natural beauty. Beautiful lakes, the park’s beach area, Peavine Falls, and more provide a cooling element to a day out in nature. Take a short hike, BMX, or play some basketball if you feel like taking in some sun rays, then get to that relaxing water! The first lake offers waterski and other athletic adventures for those willing to take on the challenge.

Alabama Splash Adventure

The Birmingham area is blessed to have a rollercoaster and water park of national standards right next door in Bessemer. Splash Adventure is the star during the summer months, with the lazy river, splash pools, and endless sliding options bringing plenty of smiles along with the opportunity to cool down on a hot Alabama day.

Cahaba River

The Cahaba River is one of the most known waterways in Birmingham, and it’s full of great hangout spots. Remember to keep it clean! Image from Cahaba River Society

The Cahaba River is a state treasure. Not only is the Cahaba River the longest sustainably free-flowing river in Alabama, it is also one of the most biologically diverse and scenic waterways in the country. Birminghamians have a bunch of ducked-off swimming spots complete with rope swings along this great wonder (check for logs!). The bridge that takes you to the Piggly Wiggly near Liberty Park and the 280 bridge next to the Target shopping center are two starting points to outdoor adventures. The Old Slab in Helena is a great spot for a casual sit down in the water. Be safe and have fun on Alabama’s primary river! The Cahaba is also a great option for kayaking and canoeing. The good people at Cahaba River Society even offer guided canoe trips on occasion.

Birmingham Area Libraries

What has AC and access to hours of entertainment? You guessed it - your local library! The Birmingham area has some of the finest libraries to be found in town, and many are known for their esteemed comic, manga, DVD, and other fun collections. A Jefferson County Library Card gives you complete access to dozens of these community-centered wonders. The Vestavia Hills library has one of the best reading room experiences, with a glass enclosure that pokes out into the woods for a very cool natural (but air-conditioned) experience.

La Sabrosita Ice Cream Shop

Cooling down is tastiest at La Sabrosita. We’d highly recommend it. Image from La Sabrosita

Being cool should taste good, and La Sabrosita provides that for the people of the Birmingham area. Cups of spicy fruit join ice cream flavors like tres leches, pistachios, strawberry, and everything in between. There are just as many varieties of popsicles - meaning you’re guaranteed a chill day with some delicious flavors.

No matter what you go, you’re creating memories in the Magic City that you call home - and staying cool while doing so!
