Two years ago this past June I started Mounjaro and I don’t regret it. In fact, I would do it again without hesitation.
When I took my first shot in June 2023, I had doubts and reservations, fear of sickness, social shaming, etc, but my excitement about the possible results outweighed those fears (pun intended). I have no regrets, and I am thankful that I asked about the injections, researched them and got out of my own way and reached out to a doctor who could get me started. I am 37lbs down and maintaining (goal was 40lbs).
Over these past 2 years I have observed a lot about injections, weight loss and eating in general. I have talked and watched people who are on their own weight loss journey; I have wondered why others don’t join the journey; I have listened to podcasts about the injections, and I have my own thoughts:
1. If the shot was free or very inexpensive, I would probably keep with it for forever. Yep.
2. There might be a few people who are taking it too far – Let’s lose the weight and move (Ozempic face is a real thing).
3. You can get flabby if you don’t exercise and do weights. Truth.
4. I hear a lot “oh, I bet they have been doing the shots”. Well, if you are noticing a great weight loss, you are probably right. Good for them for working on their health, but again, see #2.
5. Eat healthy, but eat what you want; enjoy the carbs – weight loss is all about caloric intake (as my dad always said)
6. The shots curve your desire to drink, thus you can become a lightweight when going out with friends, so watch it
About a year and 6months after I started, I reached my goal and knew it was time to create an exit plan. Sidenote: toward the end, taking the shot bothered me – not physically, but it just “icked” me out for some reason. It was time to move one.
By the end, I was on a 12.5mg dose and Mounjaro only goes to 15mg, so I was about at my peak as it was. After talking with my doctor about how to wean off the shots, I was told I would need to step down the dosages every 3-4months until I was back at 2.5mg. Um … that would take another year or more and I didn’t want to take the time (nor spend the money) to “step down’. I weaned and watched it. I spread my shots out to every 2 weeks or more and I paid attention to what I ate and how much. It wasn’t hard and I felt it was my responsibility at that time to “do it on my own”. So far so good. My eating habits have definitely changed over the 2 years; smaller portions, I still don’t eat much breakfast, Im more aware of when I am full and I slow down; I never lost my sweet tooth
I had a very good experience with Mounjaro … and now, word on the street is that drug companies want to create “the shot” in an oral form – less expensive as those factories are already in place and much easier. When/if this happens, I’ll be happy to add that to my morning vitamin routine for maintenance.
