Labor Day is one of the most important holidays that we celebrate in the United States. It celebrates crucial victories for the working person that are often taken for granted nowadays. 5-day workweeks with an average of 40 hours (and no child workers unless you are an Alabama Hyundai plant) were just a glimmer of hope in the hard-knock life that many served during our country’s industrial revolution. The hard work off and on the clock led to a better life for us all, and we pay tribute each September by resting and reorganizing. Grilling, music, and spending time with friends are often a trademark of this holiday, and Birmingham has a few locations that are opening up the Labor Day long weekend experience to all people.

Labor Day Jammer at Seasick Records (3pm til 6ish)

Birmingham’s favorite record store is bringing the live music and tailgating experience to the city’s hippest parking lot this afternoon. Magic City favorites DOGG, Sugarplums, and The Audiovore join Courtesy from Chicago for a mixed-genre mashup of talented acts that go great for a midday tailgating experience in the heart of Alabama. This is a BYOB event.

Free Burgers & Hotdogs at Ghost Train (2-7pm)

What’s Labor Day without some grilling? Not a full holiday, I tell you. Ghost Train Brewing is coming through for Birminghamians who aren’t able to grill or don’t feel like it on this damp day by providing free burgers and hotdogs for people to enjoy. Good food with some great drinks is the ideal way to spend a long holiday.

Safe Summer Series feat. Young Joc at Memorial Park (Begins at 5pm)

I can hear it now. “Meet me at Memorial Park in Birmingham for the Labor Day edition of the Safe Summer Series, it’s going down.” Young Joc is going to make the evening a catchy one full of dancing with his appearance at this important Magic City event series. The early 2000s hitmaker provides a great soundtrack to close out the long weekend.

No matter where you end up, or if you choose to spend the day resting at home or are still working to help others enjoy their day, we hope you find some calmness, joy, and pride in what you do!
