August is going to be a hot month in Alabama, and I’m not just talking about the temperature! Some of the nation’s biggest acts are coming into Birmingham for 31 days of top tier live music and comedy. About Town doesn’t want our faithful readers to miss out so we are highlighting some of our favorite shows for the month. Enjoy! 

Big Time Rush, Max & Jax at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre (Tuesday, August 1st)

The Oak Mountain Amphitheatre is starting the month of August off with a Big Time Rush as the world-famous pop stars come to Pelham along with Max & Jax as part of their “Can’t Get Enough” tour. The Tuesday, August 1st, show is sure to be a hot one full of die-hard fans and catchy tunes.

Tim Heidecker at Saturn (Friday, August 4th)

One of the most unique voices in comedy (times two) will be at Birmingham’s famed Saturn venue on Friday, August 4th. Tim Heidecker has brought the laughs for years through The Tim and Eric Awesome Show and much more, but this live performance brings even more of Tim’s talents to the table! The first half of the evening will be centered around comedy, with the second half focused on music. The two halves combine for a whole can’t-miss performance. 

Seriously “Built Environment” Release Show at Saturn (Sunday, August 6th)

Seriously - one of the most cherished bands to call Birmingham home - will be celebrating the release of their new album, Built Environment, at Saturn on Sunday, August 6th! This celebration is a free event that will feature other Magic City favorites including Fauxdeep, Rang3r, and Witch’s Wall

Sylvia Rose Novak w/ Brotha Josh + Grand Champ at The Upstairs at Avondale (Thursday, August 10)

The Upstairs at Avondale has found its calling in showcasing some of the hottest rising acts across the nation (and often the Southeast), and this trend looks to continue with a jam-packed August schedule. An early highlight is Athens, Georgia-based musician Sylvia Rose Novak playing upstairs on Thursday, August 10th. She will be joined by two of Birmingham’s best bands in Brotha Josh and Grand Champ

Gavin DeGraw at Iron City (Saturday, August 12th)

The Magic City’s most famously air-conditioned venue is gearing up for an exciting August, starting with the arrival of Gavin DeGraw gracing the Iron City stage on Saturday, August 12th. The hit-maker will be playing a collection of his beautiful songs which includes “I Don’t Want To Be”, “Not Over You”, and “Chariot”. 

Curren$y with Frank Luke at Zydeco (Friday, August 18th)

If you don’t catch me anywhere else this month, you will see me at the Curren$y show at Zydeco on Friday, August 18th. Curren$y has one of the most impressive and consistent catalogs in hip-hop and the chance to see the musician with a live band is an opportunity to witness something great. Throw in the fact that Birmingham favorite Frank Luke is opening and you simply need to be in the room for this concert.

Jodeci, SWV, & Dru Hill at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre (Saturday, August 19th)

R&B lovers are in for the night of their life at the Summer Block Party spectacular taking place at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre on Saturday, August 19th! Three of the biggest singing groups of all time in Jodeci, SWV, and Dru Hill will be playing that evening. As SWV sings so smoothly you’ll want to be “Right Here” for the night’s festivities. 

Karlous Miller at the Alabama Theatre (Saturday, August 19th)

Karlous Miller has become one of the biggest names in comedy. His work on Wild ‘N Out and numerous other comedy shows, combined with his role as one-third of the hit podcast 85 South Show, has made him a must-see for those seeking laughs. Birmingham residents will get the chance to do exactly that at the historical Alabama Theatre on Saturday, August 19th

WBHM presents NPR Tiny Desk: The Best of Alabama (Thursday, August 24th)

The NPR Tiny Desk series is stuff of legend at this point in time, and the annual submission intakes are some of the most fun videos you’ll see all year. The public radio network is celebrating the series on a local level as WBHM hosts three of this year’s top tiny desk submitters from the state of Alabama. Dominique (Birmingham), Chelsea Who? (Huntsville), and Cahaba Roots will all be playing live at this fun event at Saturn on Thursday, August 24th

$uicideboy$ at The BJCC (Friday, August 25th)

$uicideboy$ continue to sell out shows in Birmingham and are preparing for their biggest show in the Magic City yet. The Friday, August 25th, show at The BJCC’s Legacy Arena is sure to be a thrilling affair and it may be the show I’ve heard most talked about for the month of August. Ghostemane, City Morgue, Semetary, and Ramirez will all be in attendance. 

Up All Night - 1D Party at Iron City (Friday, August 25th)

One Direction lovers unite! Iron City will be hosting the ultimate dance tribute to one of the most popular groups of the last decade on Friday, August 25th. DJ Camel Crush will be on the 1s and 2s for this evening this is sure to feature hundreds of Birmingham area 1D lovers belting out their favorite tunes at the top of their lungs. 

Switchfoot at Avondale Brewery (Saturday, August 26th)

We “Dare You To Move” to catch Switchfoot at Avondale Brewery on Saturday, August 26th! Switchfoot took the nation by storm with their 2003 album, The Beautiful Letdown, and have continued to grow in popularity in the decades since. The band’s uplifting, thoughtful tunes will go great with the beautiful outdoor venue found on 41st St

Coco Jones at Iron City (Tuesday, August 29th)

Coco Jones has been all over the airwaves in 2023, but Birminghamians will get the chance to see the red-hot artist live in concert this month at Iron City! The soulful singer will be taking the stage on Tuesday, August 29th for a can’t-miss concert in the Magic City. We imagine this show will be close to a sell out so be sure to get tickets early.
