8th Annual A State of Teal Awareness Campaign

LCBF’s A State of Teal Awareness Campaign began on September 1 and will continue throughout the month; its goal being to highlight the importance of increasing awareness of gynecologic cancers.  Awareness is spread through the use of radio advertising, digital advertising, and events including Head Over Teal. Teal lighting will be observed in many businesses and cities throughout the state.

“We are delighted to continue our awareness campaign in September,” said Ramona Graffeo, LCBF Executive Director. “With no early detection or screening for four of the five gynecologic cancers, spreading gynecologic cancer awareness information is vital to women of all ages and a cornerstone of what we do here at LCBF.”

The Laura Crandall Brown Foundation

Every 5 minutes, a woman dies from a gynecologic (GYN) cancer (ovarian, cervical, endometrial/uterine, vaginal, and vulvar). This year alone, more than 33,000 women will die.  Alabama is tied as the number one state for cervical cancer deaths in the U.S. and ranks 6th for ovarian cancer deaths. There are no early detection tests or screenings for four out of five GYN cancers.  Laura Crandall Brown Foundation focuses on early detection research, awareness education, and support services for GYN cancer patients and families. Since its founding in 2009 LCBF has:

  • Granted more than $500,000 for ovarian cancer early detection research
  • Educated tens of thousands of community members on GYN cancer prevention info, signs and symptoms, and
  • Provided emotional, educational, and direct financial support to thousands of GYN cancer patients, survivors, and co-survivors.

Health & Safety Precautions

In accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines, the 11th annual Head Over Teal 5K/10K will be held virtually from September 18 to September 26, 2020 featuring 5K and 10K races. Runners are invited to document their race times, share photos of family support, and connect with other participants and the LCBF staff via social media during race week.

“The health and safety of our supporters, volunteers, and staff are of the highest priority here at LCBF,” said Irene Goddard, LCBF Development Director. “We are excited to keep the Head Over Teal tradition going and to connect with participants via social media and while doing so, raise proceeds that help fund early detection research, GYN cancer awareness, and financial support for patients and their families.”
